What to do if you feel unheard by your midwife?

What to Do If You Feel Unheard by Your Midwife

Feeling unheard by your midwife can be upsetting and confusing, especially when decisions about your pregnancy are being discussed. If this happens, it can help to ask for clarification, prepare questions for your next appointment, or talk things through with an experienced midwife who can help you understand your options and feel more confident in conversations with your maternity team.

Why This Happens

Pregnancy appointments can sometimes feel very quick.

You might walk in with a list of things you want to talk about, and before you know it the appointment is over and you’re walking back to the car thinking:

“I didn’t actually get to ask half of what I wanted to.”

Or you might leave feeling unsure about a recommendation that was made, but not quite confident enough in the moment to question it.

If that sounds familiar, please know this: you are not the only one who feels this way.

Midwives care deeply about the families they look after. But maternity services are incredibly busy. Appointments are often short, clinics run behind, and midwives may be responsible for many women at the same time. That can mean conversations sometimes focus on the most immediate clinical tasks rather than giving you the time to properly explore questions or concerns.

That doesn’t mean your questions aren’t important. It just means the system doesn’t always leave enough space for them.

Your Questions Matter

You deserve to understand what is happening in your pregnancy and why certain recommendations are being made.

That might include wanting to talk through things like:

  • why something has been suggested

  • what your options actually are

  • what the risks and benefits might look like for you

  • how a recommendation might affect your birth plans

These are reasonable things to want clarity about.

Things That Can Help

Sometimes small changes can make a big difference.

Write down your questions before appointments
When appointments are short, having a small list can help make sure the most important things get discussed.

Ask for clarification
If something isn’t clear, it’s absolutely okay to ask for it to be explained again or in a different way.

Ask for another conversation
If you feel unsure after an appointment, asking for more time to talk something through is completely reasonable.

Sometimes It Helps to Talk Things Through With Another Midwife

Many women find it helpful to talk things through with an experienced midwife outside of the usual clinic environment.

Having a calm conversation where there is time to explore your questions can help you:

  • understand recommendations more clearly

  • work out what your options really are

  • feel more confident about conversations with your maternity team

Mobile Midwives offers online consultations with experienced UK midwives for exactly this reason.

Our small but growing team of midwives are committed to giving you the time and space to talk through whatever is on your mind. We can help you understand what’s happening, think through your options, and work out the best way to raise questions or concerns within your NHS care pathway.

It’s not about replacing your NHS care — it’s about helping you feel informed, supported, and confident navigating it.

You Deserve to Feel Heard

Pregnancy is a time when important decisions can sometimes come quickly, and it’s natural to want reassurance that you understand what’s happening.

Feeling listened to and supported makes a huge difference.

If you need a bit more time, more explanation, or simply someone to talk things through with, that’s a completely reasonable thing to ask for.

If You’d Like to Talk Things Through

If you would like the opportunity to talk through your questions or concerns, you can speak to a midwife online through a Mobile Midwives consultation.

Sometimes just having the time to talk things through properly can make everything feel a lot clearer.
